Winner of the BMI Winterbourne Hospital '30 Pictures to Celebrate 30 Years' Competition

In: News
Well what a night this turned out to be and I was just happy to have 4 pictures in the final 30 pictures. This was a win in itself and all those that made it through should be proud of their achievement as these will now be on permanent display in the patients rooms and hopefully making their stay a bit easier, and a wonderful idea. I've been lucky enough to have only spent time in hospital once in my life and wish I'd have had some of the amazing pictures on show tonight to look at instead of blank white walls, and all from our lovely Dorset scenery.

I couldn't believe it when they announced my picture of the view from Wears Hill Abbotsbury as the winner of the First Prize of £500. It was taken on a cold February morning after I'd been shooting the sunrise until it became impossible to shoot into the sun due to flare, so I started to pack away and head home for breakfast. As it was about -12 in the wind chill I noticed the mists starting to form down below as the sun rose higher and the light turned the landscape into a lovely rich golden colour. I switched lenses to my 70-200mm and decided to turn out of the sun slightly and zoom in on St Catherine's Chapel as my main focal point, but love the depth created by the hillsides rolling from left to right. It's one of my favourite images this year, so glad the judges also approved, and I still remember how cold it was and think this also turned out to be the coldest day of the year and most of north Dorset and surrounding counties had heavy snow later on in the day. The sheep thought I was mad!!!

Thank you to everyone at the BMI Winterbourne Hospital who presented a lovely prize giving evening with excellent food. Also a big thank you to the Dorset Echo for running this competition.

I'm very proud to be the winner of this competition and have 4 of my images on display in the hospital rooms.
