<image:caption>December 2013 - I'd planned to hike along the South West Coastal path to White Nothe or wherever looked a good point to photograph the sunrise, but the sky looked too clear to the East for a descent shot. Weymouth and Portland were covered in low cloud that was beginning to clear so I decided to set up on the hillside near the South Down car park at the top of Ringstead, in the hope that the rising sun would paint the landscape with it's lovely Autumn golden light. I wasn't disapointed.</image:caption>

The Bananas were actually hanging downwards and water was thrown at them using a small plastic cup and various exposures captured using strobe lighting. A selection of the best shaped splashes were then composited together in Photoshop. The hand shaped splash seems to be supporting the bananas, which influenced my decision to rotate the image on its side and create an almost gravity free feeling. I'm also a fan of the film 'The Abyss' and the CGI water effects used.

<image:caption>This was taken in 2009 so pre-olympic development although the marina already existed at this stage. I particularly liked the ship in the bay far right. I kept my exposure time to 10 seconds which is long enough to create light trails, but short enough to prevent them burning out and looking ugly. I had to take the ISO up to 1600 but thats not a problem these days. These pictures are always best not long after sunset when the sky is still blue.. don't wait until it's black as that will just result in no detail in the sky and lots of noise/pixelation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>March 2012 - A stormy day that looked like it may clear towards sunset, so I took a chance and made my way down to Chesil Beach. As I was setting up the cloud cover started to clear and and I waited for the sun to start to disapear below the horizon. This not only prevented lens flare but and also illuminated the cloud cover above me, in a way all photographers dream of. I also wanted the light levels to drop low enough to use my chosen aperture/shutter speed combination to capture the energy in the breaking waves. Fast enough to capture the shape of the waves, yet blur the motion slightly to capture its motion... a fine balance. In the distance you can still make out local fisherman setting up for the night and hopefully a good evenings catch.</image:caption>

<image:caption>October 2015 - I wasn't alone on Saturday in capturing the magical 'misticle' event that took place at Corfe Castle as other head-torches could be seen dug in ready for what we all hoped would happen. Landscape Photographers dream of these moments and it's been around 5 years for me to capture the ruins peering through the mist, but the weather predictions looked good and worth ignoring other planned locations and making the 40 minute drive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>December 2014 - This was the morning after the so called 'Weather Bomb' or what used to be called simply a 'very windy day'. The tide was higher than predicted due to the prevailing wind driving the waves into Durdle Door bay, which made it impossible to get down onto the beach for my proposed sunrise shoot. Also the cloud cover was thick and the sunrise became a non event, so I decided to trek across the coastline towards Bats Head and scout some new locations for possible shoots another day. On my way back the weather started to improve and this shot was taken close to the top of Bats Head as the storm clouds started clear. It's a dramatic part of the jurassic coastline anyway, but the storm clouds add to the mood of the rugged scenery, and Durdle Door adds a familiar focal point and sense of scale.</image:caption>

A thick slice of cucumber was dropped into a glass tank filled with only 2 cms of water. The cucumber creates a hole in the water and if your lucky this wave pattern before it slides off in random directions depending on the angle it hits the water. Only 2 shots out of 50 had this wave effect so not easy to create. Cucumber is over 90% water, hence the title.

<image:caption>This is an image from a recent set of studio images I created for a still life theme of "Still life + liquid = Impact". I wanted to show that the addition of liquid to every day still life objects can be made more interesting and have greater visual impact if liquid is added.

<image:caption>December 2013 - A fairly calm day for Durdle Door beach compared to recent rain and storms, but the waves were still breaking nicely for me. I love how they smooth the shingle out into a perfectly flat surface allowing the sea to run easily inwards without effort until it hits my feet and I occasionally get wet. No one around this morning to leave foot prints and spoil the view.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The evening was lovely and sunny, but the weather had been changeable, and as I was walking through the woods I could see the sky darkening and a storm moving across. I could see a small beach ahead so made a run for the steps and onto the beach, and couldn't believe my luck when I saw the old tree face down in the sand, displaying its weathered roots like a peacock. I quickly setup as the storm moved across Poole Harbour making a lovely scene more dramatic, then packed away quickly before the heavens opened.</image:caption>

<image:caption>December 2014 - High winds and heavy rain had made it difficult and too dangerous for a proposed sunrise shoot at Hobarrow bay with fellow photographers, but the rain later stopped and the sun came out. Unfortunately the rain started again whilst at Hobarrow and the winds were too high, so we made our way back before the incoming tide cut off our access back. As the rain stopped I managed to capture this image as the storm clouds passed over and some golden rays of the early morning sun broke through.</image:caption>

Tide was close to high tide and I've tried to capture the power of the sea around this part of the Dorset coast on a fairly calm day for Portland. There was little wind this morning so didn't have the usual problems with sea spray coating filters. Pre-sunrise was nice and then the mist thickened, but I'd been in this situation before and waited a bit longer for the warming sun to burn off some of the mist. The puzzle here is which way up is the Rubik's Cube? The Cube is actually underwater and shot from low down as the surface of the water acts like a mirror. Water is then dropped into the tank to create the splash effects, and when the image is rotated 180° it gives the appearance of the cube jumping out of the water.

<image:caption>February 2014 - I arrived the day before to check out this amazing part of the coastline and was met with 40 mph gusting winds and occasional rain showers, but constant sea spray making it difficult to work in. I decided to return for sunrise in the hope of less stormy conditions. The wind was less but the waves were more intense and a higher tide meant that the rocky ledges down below were not safe, as occasionally a bank of waves would break right over the ledges up to the cliff walls and easy to get caught out. I watched from a sheltered location above but still had to work against the spray. I could feel the awesome power of the waves hitting the cliff face and ledges below me, and an exilarating experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>January 2014 - A nice crisp winters morning made a pleasant change from the rain we've been having during the week. Not much colour before sunrise but the early morning sun cast a nice light over the chalk rock faces as it started to appear from below the horizon to the right of me. With all the coastal erotion recently I wonder how much longer Old Harry will survive, but hopefully for many years to come.</image:caption>

<image:caption>November 2013, Second Wind - I managed to get over to Portland for round 2 of the storms this week, but not as bad as the previous 80 mph winds, but still gusting around 30-40 mph. The tide was high and the waves were crashing straight in from the west and Pulpit Rock was practically unreachable against the wind and the bucket loads of sea spray. I decided to lay low behind rocks on the South side of the coastline to give me and my camera some shelter from the spray, but still a spectacular display of natures power.</image:caption>

<image:caption>May 2015 - We used to spend many afternoons at Kingston Maurward with the kids when they were young, visiting the animals and walking around the grounds. I like the Autumn colours here when the trees start to to turn various shades of gold and copper, but Spring and early Summer are nice for the flowers. We now have days here with my eldest daughter and her son, so the circle of life has continued for us at this lovely location and we are getting to enjoy it all over again.</image:caption>

I wanted to show that the addition of liquid to every day still life objects can be made more interesting and have greater visual impact if liquid is added.

My family and I are from Yorkshire and moved to Dorset when I was 2. The only rose most Yorkshiremen will wear is white and certainly not red which gave me the idea for this symbolic image. The history of the white rose for Yorkshire and red rose for Lancashire, is tarnished with blood from the 15th Century wars between the house of York and Lancaster, but all good now, and we're all just Northerners together living down South.. apart from the Cricket field!!!

A cocktail cherry was dropped into a Babycham style of glass I found in a charity shop. This created a nice splash and a nice mess to clean up between each set of shots until I achieved the effect I was looking for.

<image:caption>April 2016 - It’s a bit of a trek across the Lulworth ranges to get to Mupe Bay, but always has the wow factor when you arrive. I’ve looked at the view from the surrounding cliffs over ‘Bacon Hole’ towards Mupe for a while now, usually on my way home from a morning shoot in the bay itself, but decided to give it the attention it deserved this morning. A nice bit of cloud cover at dawn created an explosion of colour as the sun approached the horizon hidden by the surrounding hills and well worth the 4:15 am alarm call.</image:caption>

<image:caption>January 2015 - It's quite a trek from Durdle Door along the coast to Bats Head, not far in distance, but probably some of the steepest climbs along the coastal path to get there. <image:caption>March 2012 - A strong sea mist had drifted in by the time I reached Durdle Door, and a few photographers were heading back home telling me "there's nothing to see but mist today". I then sprinted to the beach to get set up in time for the sun going down, as the potential for something special happening in the mist was too much to ignore. The scene in these conditions could almost be from the other side of the world rather than Dorset. This was the first frame I fired after quickly setting up and the next frames had lost the beautiful glow of the sun as it seemed to be quickly extinguished by the bank of mist closing in. The rocks in the bay all have names, starting with 'The Bull' in the foreground, then 'The Blind Cow', 'The Cow' and finally 'The Calf'.</image:caption>

<image:caption>December 2012 - A very windy stormy morning, but luckily the rain from earlier was holding off. The erosion on this part of the coast is getting bad and I'm stood on all that's left of the ledge I normally stand on to capture this view. My camera and tripod are weighted down with my bag to stop them blowing over the edge in the high winds. After taking this picture I moved back to safety and as I let go of my camera briefly to open my bag camera bag a gust of wind blew my tripod and camera over and face down into the muddy bank. Luckily the only damage was a Lee ND filter but £80 all the same... the hazards of Landscape photography and how dangerous the coastline is at the moment in this awful weather. Be careful out there!!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>November 2012 - My first visit to this beautiful location and worth the trek across the fields. At certain stages of the tide when the waves wash over the horizontal surface, the surface undulations cause the water to bob about making the ledge appear to dance, hence its name. The tide was on its way out but still rolling over the ledge and into the pool blasted out of the Purbeck rock near the beginning of the 20th century for use by local schools.</image:caption>

<image:caption>December 2013 - There had been too much low level cloud for a decent sunrise picture from the beach so I decided to stay on the high ground. As the sun started to rise above the horizon into the cloud cover it's rays started to burst out into the open sky and created the strange effect you can see in this image. I also didn't fancy the mud slide down to the beach after the recent heavy rain fall and sad to see how much of this part of the coastline is being eroded. The Moonrise had been late at 4 am in the morning and is still visible top right.</image:caption>

The storm clouds didn’t clear anyway until the sun was too high and I had to keep low to see the sun poke its head above the clearing cloud bank. <image:caption>January 2014 - I love Maiden Castle but I'm still trying to find the best view, as so many. Only an arial view can capture its amazing structure and the scale of this iron age hill fort, so I try to capture small sections of the surrounding views. I never feel alone up there in the early hours or late at night as so much history surrounds the old settlement which dates back to 600 BC. The sunrise was nothing special but then the beautiful golden light of the early sun started to warm the landscape and everything started to glow. In the distance you can see the flooded fields from the heavy rainfall this month which has caused the Winterbourne river to burst its banks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>April 2016 - A 3:30 am wake up for me to get to Corfe for Dawn, which wasn’t bad, but not as great as I was hoping for. The overnight cloud cover started to clear a bit too early for my liking, but still a beautiful morning to be out on the hillside overlooking one of Dorset’s best known locations. The sun rising to the left and almost behind the castle in April leaves the ruins almost silhouetted against the morning sky and its possible to capture a sunburst through the window, but this has been done recently and I don't like to copy. I decided to move down the hillside as the sun rose higher in the sky and waited for it to poke it’s head above the hillside for a burst of golden light, before flare would cause too many problems.</image:caption>

It's always worth waiting at least half an hour after the sun has disappeared below the horizon as sometimes that's when the magic starts to happen. Weymouth and Portland were covered in low cloud that was beginning to clear so I decided to set up on the hillside near the South Down car park at the top of Ringstead, in the hope that the rising sun would paint the landscape with it's lovely Autumn golden light. I wanted to show that the addition of liquid to every day still life objects can be made more interesting and have greater visual impact if liquid is added.

The crystal slice is from my daughter's collection as she loves gem stones. This was placed on a sheet of 5mm white acrylic and backlit to create a lightbox effect. Additional lighting was added to light the crystal slice from the top to show detail in the stone edges. Blue food colouring was added to match the colour of the crystal using a pipette so I could control the placement of the liquid and create an interesting shape. The abstract composition of this image was influenced by a recent visit to Salvador Dali and Picasso exhibitions whilst on holiday in Brugge.

<image:caption>September 2015 - The weather the day before plus the forecast for the sunrise hours looked perfect for a misty morning. I'd planned to go to Corfe Castle but my van had other plans and caused a delay, but always have a plan B in mind. The River Frome in Wareham was already looking promising and the mists would increase as the sun started to rise so I setup there and waited. Pre-sunrise was nice and then the mist thickened, but I'd been in this situation before and waited a bit longer for the warming sun to burn off some of the mist. The mist acts as a big diffuser and spreads the golden light of the sun across the scene creating a lovely warm glow. I also created a Square Format image for those that prefer.</image:caption>

This was the last in my set of 10 shots. I planned it that way so I could drink the beer after all the hard work creating this set of images. The bottle was placed into a large fish tank containing enough water to cover the base of the bottle just below the label. A clean shot of the bottles label was taken first to use as a base image and then the wave was created and various shots taken. Water was then thrown at the bottle and images captured using strobe lighting and the best images composited together in Photoshop.

Face East if the winds are blowing strong from the West and lie low behind the rocks helps. Also important to use a long lens to keep yourself out of danger ... if you go in then it will be others that have to put their lives at risk trying to save you, and no picture is worth it. I think this is what has become known as a fairly calm day on Portland over the past few weeks compared to the extreme weather the islanders have had to endure. Stay safe out there!!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>January 2014 - I went for an early morning trip to Old Harry Rocks to see if I could find a different view of that part of the coastline. The moon was still up and shining bright in the sky nearly an hour before sunrise, so I decided to face towards the Pinnacles which are a smaller group of rocks, but just as interesting, and keep the moon in frame. I did think about doing a separate exposure for the moon and blending it in afterwards in Photoshop, but l like the starburst effect as the light illuminates Old Nick's Ground across the cliff tops .. just love these old Dorset names :) The Swanage street lights are still on in the distance.</image:caption>

<image:caption>May 2015 - I walk the dog in these fields every morning rain or shine and have been planning to take this view when the rape seed was in full bloom this year. I've been waiting for the right conditions as needed a blue sky with white fluffy clouds and wind. I needed the clouds to cast shadows across the fields on a sunny day and create pockets of light, and the wind blowing through the rape seed. I used a neutral density filter to allow me to shoot with a 0.3 second shutter speed to show movement in the rape seed. Any slower and the rape seed would have shown as a complete blur and not the effect I was looking for. A week later and most of the yellow flowers had gone and the rape seed pods have taken over as the crop ripens. It will probably be another 3 years before the rape seed returns to these fields and probably back to barley, so I had to get the shot this weekend.</image:caption>

<image:caption>January 2014 - A cold wet and very windy morning on top of Maiden Castle looked like it was going to be a 'wish I'd stayed in my warm bed' sort of day. I was struggling to keep my tripod on the ground as the gusts swirled around on top, and passing rain showers kept me and my gear nice and wet. Then the rain stopped briefly and the sun managed to break through the cloud cover like a burning fireball, before disappearing into the storm clouds again. Time to go home for breakfast and a nice warm cup of tea :)</image:caption>

This time of year the sun sets inland towards Lyme Regis and the cliffs will suddenly be cast in shadow as if someone has turned the light out about 20 minutes before sunset. I think most of the country will now know West Bay as 'Broadchurch' after the success of the recent TV drama, and you can already buy 'Broadchurch Fish & Chips'!!!</image:caption>
